Design Philosophy

The advantages of Multihulls have become more apparent during the last 20 years particularly with the multihulls level cruising stability and fuel efficiencies. Perry Catamarans initially built the 43 foot and 57 foot Sail Cats. From these evolved the 44.5 foot and the 62 foot Motor Cats. Recently Perry Catamarans has introduced the 45 foot and 59 foot Motor Sailers. These models were introduced following discussions with owners and sailers who have logged between 80% - 85% of their cruising as motoring or motor-sailing. There is a lot of confidence in being assured of time-tables whilst cruising and the Motor Sailer enables the best of both worlds.

 Design Philosophy
Perry yachts are born for the sea and have evolved from 4 generations of shipwrights. Sleek, styling, larger hulls and higher bridge-deck clearance set them apart from others designed for the charter fleets and racing. Close examination reveals exceptional equipment, sails, engines and all other associated components. They are serious, off-shore, well-built cruising yachts, designed to handle the elements and deliver their crew safely to far off ports. For those experienced in sailing and cruising, our yachts stand apart. For those new to the lifestyle, a comparison of other yacht designs and equipment make our advantages evident. Whether you are Coastal Cruising, harbour day sailing or Passage-Making offshore, you'll be delighted with your choice of a Perry Yacht.

 Comfort
The ability of Perry Catamarans to offer a wide range of options to suit each owner's desires is one of the secrets of their success. With such a wide stable platform to work with, our designers have substituted and modified areas to suit a wide range of individuals requirements.

From cabin layouts to suit private owners who wish to cruise the world in luxurious comfort to 4 cabin configurations for entertainment and charter use for the discerning skipper, our boats are able to be sailed singlehanded, with all controls located at the cockpit. The large deck and underwing spaces allow for good ventilation to cabins, saloon, galley and bathrooms which compliments the optional air-conditioning.

We are able to incorporate a duck-board between the aft steps which adds another large area for outdoor activities. The duckboard can be fixed, with a crane for the dinghy or it can be raised and lowered via electric hydraulics to access the water. This area doubles the size of the cockpit and is perfect for sun-baking or sitting out of the wind and reading or as a diving platform.

 Helm
Visibility from the helm has in the past been a major advantage monohulls had over the first designs of catamarans. With catamarans being double the width of a monohull and with most helm positions being either left or right of the mast, the sail position made for several blind spots and tricky navigation when docking. The Perry helm is situated slightly backward of centre and at a level that enables good vision forward.

An optional second helm position is available on the starboard side of the yacht for the 57’ and 59’ yachts.  The port side helm position enjoys the ability to control all rigging lines and gives a wide arrange of navigation instrumentation at the captains finger tips. The optional helm seat has the ability to be raised or lowered with an all weather bubble hatch able to be easily slid overhead to enable headway in comfort in all conditions. Of course the optional flybridge on the power cats provide 360⁰ elevated water views something you would pay half a million $'s for if it were a house which it virtually is.

 Safety
All of Perry boats are built of resin infused foam-fibreglass and are designed with several sealed buoyancy compartments - as such they are unsinkable - pretty reassuring. Should you capsize in a mono-hull there is only one way you will go when full of water, with lead bolted to the bottom. There are many examples of this. Combined with many new innovations in communications you can be assured of being saved if the worst of storms happened. Being able to forecast more accurately and having a boat capable of fast sailing and low passage times decreases your time at sea and therefore vulnerability. Superior safety equipment is imperative for offshore passages. One of our 43 footers recently sailed to Tahiti and had 70 knots of wind and 8 metre seas. Apart from a few minor gear failures they arrived safely and the crew expressed confidence in their ship.

 Performance
Perry Sail Cats have been designed with a moderate beam / length ratio which results in a good load carrying capacity and a relatively fast production multihull. Fatter hulls with beds in the hull, rather than on the bridge-deck have a lower ratio which results in slower sailing ability

and in bad weather these fat hulls are susceptible to structural damage. This type hull shape also suits charter work in low winded areas. Our optional bow sprit allows Perry Catamarans to carry much bigger sail areas and as such increased wind power ratios. Several of our 43 footers have sailed constantly at 15 - 17 knots p/h and occasionally at 19 knots p/h, averaging 12.5 p/h knots over long periods. At the other end we have sailed 5 knots to windward in 9 knots of wind. Our 57 footers have recorded 15 - 17 knots p/h comfortably and up to 20 knots p/h on occasions.

 Motor sailers
Our Motor Sailers are a hybrid of the sail and power yachts. They have the potential to cover up to and greater than 3000 nautical miles under motor only which will enable carefully planned trips to various places on the planet. Their refined hull shape in the aft section enables better fuel efficiency, and the ability to cater for bigger motors than the sail hull shape not to mention their sailing ability has not been comprimised.

 Motor Cat
Our Motor Boats in good conditions will achieve 1 litre/mile/hr at 8 - 9 knots (8/9 litres per hour) and 2 litres / mile at 13 - 14 knots (26 / 28 litres / per hour). Considering that it is unusual to be able to do more than 14 / 15 knots at sea, it is easy to see the advantage of our easily driven hulls. In a comparison test with our 44.5 Motor Cat verse a 56 foot Monohull and a 62 foot Cat on foils at 15 knots.
1. The 56’ Monohull was using 250 litres/hour
2. The 62’ Cat on foils was using 130 litres/hour
3. The 44.5 Perry Motor Cat was using 26 litres/hour
These figures are why motor boat owners are re-assessing their choices. Cats have more room, are more comfortable and stability at sea and undoubtedly more economical to run.

Technical
All Perry models have been designed by Naval Architects and are able to be built in survey and to overseas standards, such as C.E. Resin-infusing has been instrumental in our production for a number of years and presently all hulls, decks and parts are resin-infused with foam and glass. This system enables us to get an optimum resin - glass ratio resulting in a lighter weight and stronger structure we also use small amounts of high-tech materials (Kevlar-Carbon).

Energy
Our boats are set up with the appropriate energy capacity to suit your lifestyle with self-sufficiency options available to suit your requirements. Starting batteries are separate and isolated and are cross-linked for emergencies. The batteries whether they be 12 volt or 24 volt are charged via;
1. Engine Alternators
2. Solar Panels
3. Generator - fuel or wind
4. Shore power, 240 volt is also available via an inverter
